NEXEA Goes Online, Offering Startup Investment Up To RM5,000,000

Online Startup Investment For Startups In Malaysia

Subang Jaya, May 18, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - This is the fifth consecutive year, Malaysia-based investment firm NEXEA Angels Sdn Bhd (NEXEA) is back with its Startup Investment programme. However, this year they have transformed their programme to an online Startup Investment programme in March, due to the recent events of COVID-19. Through the programme, startups will get an opportunity to explore pilot projects with these organisations, validate business with feedback from them, explore real-world product testing and build up traction by having these organisations as potential customers. In addition, startups will also get support from mentors from NEXEA and have an opportunity to get funded by NEXEA and its co-investment partners.

"Each of the startups is paired with two mentors who are seasoned and veteran business entrepreneurs. The startups also can explore a possible corporate partnership with our strong line-up of corporate partners this year (UEM Sunrise Bhd, Spritzer Bhd, Delloyd Group, shopper360 Sdn Bhd, and Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Bhd). This year we have introduced expert mentors. Expert mentors are startup investors who can provide expertise-based mentoring to startups such as Growth Hacking, Tech, Legal, and Finance." Says, Ben Lim, the Managing Partner at NEXEA.

To ensure the high-quality standards of NEXEA it was essential that their mentors, who are also Angel Investors, were very supportive. NEXEA quickly managed to move all events and meetings online back in March. Ben mentions, "Fortunately, our mentors were very supportive of us going 100% online".

We haven't seen the end of this crisis, but the hopes remain high within NEXEA for the upcoming years. "We will see stronger startups in the following years. I believe founders who can adapt and find 'opporthreats' (finding opportunities in threats) in this unpredictable time will capture the market" says, Ben.

The Startup Investment programme also plans to fund up to a total of RM5,000,000 into the top five companies after the Startup Accelerator programme ends, over a few more rounds of funding. In the past, one of the participants has bagged close to RM2,000,000 in total investments before being funded further by Venture Capital in the region. During the programme, each of the top five participants also gets RM50,000 in cash to help to validate their business models.

In addition to their online Startup Investment programme, NEXEA has hosted online events that aim to help startup founders stay up to date on doing business during the lockdown. The last event on April 10 was a success with over 250 live viewers.

Meanwhile, Kenny Lim, CEO of Spritzer Bhd, said, "The market is moving into AI, robotic technology, and digitalisation. Whether you like it or not, but indeed the spirit of entrepreneurship is always the first step on how an idea can be turned into a conglomerate. Spritzer is a home-grown brand, the entrepreneurship spirit is one of the factors that make us be where we are at today. One of our roles here is to share what we have learned, so others can shine."

Innovative fashion designers lead the way on sustainability

Aug 7, 2020

LONDON — Innovative fashion designers are turning to such things as horseradish and nettles to make sustainable clothing and accessories to the delight of a growing number of buyers. While more consumers are paying closer attention to how the production of goods impacts the environment, old habits die hard. A buy-and-toss mentality persists despite a boost from celebrities helping to drive the upcycle and vintage movements. Actress Maggie Q, who created an activewear line from recycled fabrics, is among activists who see plenty of room for improvement. She says she feels "sick about fast fashion.'' "You hear people say, 'Well,...

LONDON — Shortly after winning her second Booker Prize, Margaret Atwood has received a rare honor from Queen Elizabeth II for her services to literature. The Canadian novelist and poet was presented with an Order of the Companions of Honor in a ceremony at Windsor Castle Friday. She said the experience made her "a bit emotional." The Press Association quoted Atwood as saying that "when you see the Queen at her age and her schedule that she puts out, it's an inspiration to everybody, you just keep going." Atwood and British author Bernardine Evaristo split the Booker Prize ten days...

BBC faces backlash after censuring anchor for Trump remarks

Aug 7, 2020

LONDON — The BBC faced a backlash Friday after finding one of its presenters in breach of its editorial guidelines on impartiality for comments that were critical of U.S. President Donald Trump. Journalists and celebrities were demanding that the BBC overturn its decision and expressed support for BBC Breakfast anchor Naga Munchetty, who was discussing Trump's remark that four female American lawmakers should return to the "broken and crime infested places from which they came." Co-anchor, Dan Walker, asked Munchetty for her opinion on the July 17 program, and she responded: "Every time I have been told, as a woman...

British prime minister's aide divides, but will he conquer?

Aug 7, 2020

LONDON — To some, he's a strategic genius. Others call him a mayhem-loving anarchist. Everyone seems to have an opinion about Dominic Cummings. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's most powerful aide — dubbed "Boris' brain" by some — is an enigmatic backstage operator who shuns media attention, yet has been played onscreen by "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch. Since taking office two months ago, Johnson has made a series of bold moves: Promising Brexit "do or die," dealing ruthlessly with party rebels and controversially suspending Parliament. Many see Cummings' hand at work in the strategy, which has left Westminster shaken and...

Soccer star says Amazon didn't remove racist reviews of book

Aug 7, 2020

LONDON — Soccer star Eni Aluko has condemned Amazon for not removing racist reviews of her memoir posted on the online retailer's web site. Of the 31 reviews on Amazon's United Kingdom site, 27 gave "They Don't Teach This" a one-star rating. The book details the discrimination Aluko faced during her England career. Customers have used the platform to call the book "anti-white racist drivel" and "fiction" and accuse the Juventus forward of choosing to "play the race card" and "coming across as a racist herself." Aluko, who is black, and her publishers have asked Amazon to delete the racist...
